Make a Difference, Spread Loving Kindness

“Spread love. Hug the people you care about and make sure they know that you care and appreciate them. Make it known to your friends and family that you love them.”

― Germany Kent

Last week, I misread a prayer request and thought a friend and mentor was in her last moments of life. You can imagine my shock and sorrow. I immediately sat down and wrote a heartfelt letter telling this wonderful woman all that she meant to me and how she influenced my life. I included my favorite songs celebrating the beauty of her spirit in the world. Then I sent it all off via email.

Teary, I went to my husband telling him of the sad news of our friend. “Laura, you misread the email. Our friend is fine! Her prayer request was for HER friend.”

What a surprise and relief! There was a moment that I felt really foolish at sending the email. I called my friend and explained what had happened. “I hope you enjoy the gift of my words with a cup of tea. I mean every word.”

Imagine a eulogy practice in daily life. How wonderful it would be if we reached out as if it were our last moments every now and then to talk about our love. You make a difference in my life. You matter to me today and every day. If this is the last we speak, I’m so glad I got you and you got me in this lifetime.

This knocked the wind out of me in a good way. It left me pondering what is unsaid and not complete. That light was a firm illumination on the importance of keeping present, authentic, and compassionate. Thank you for this moment. Thank you for the gift of my friend being here another day. Thank you for the reminder of temporary.

Here is my wish for you today which comes from a loving kindness meditation:

May you be filled with loving kindness.

May you be held in loving kindness.

May you feel love.

May you accept yourself just as you are.

May you be happy.

May you know the natural joy of being alive.

Namaste,

Laura
